NUJ Students: Lighting fires at ADM 2006

24 March 2006

I second that motion!

Students should definitely have an opportunity to present a select number of motions at the ADM: for example, challenging establishment issues such as the refusal of publishers or journalism tutors to accept non-white faces on magazine covers. We can't just accept that as 'the way things are'.

I do feel similarly queasy about setting up a 'chapel' - a less cult-like name would give the NUJ an awful lot more credibility with younger members and help recruitment.

  • Despite being vehemently atheist, the whole 'chapel' thing doesn't really bother me. It's kind of cosy somehow, and I certainly don't mind the rather reassuring father/mother tags.

It's just not cricket to diss 'em without suggesting something new. Anyone?

The BBC 'posse', perhaps? The Telegraph 'massive'? Maybe even the Bristol Evening Post 'crew'?

How does one differentiate between a 'posse', a 'massive' and a 'crew'?! Is it dependent on size?

    How about:
    1-3 members - a crew
    3-6 members - a posse
    6-8 members - a posse
    8-10 members - a massive
    10-12 members - a collective

    And so on...

  • So more than 13 would be a mob?

After more than a decade in this business, I've kind of got used to the term 'chapel', though it does feel odd explaining it to others.

The idea of grizzled old NUJ veterans trying to get wid the yoot' by calling themselves "crews" or "posses" would be a bit cringeworthy though wouldn't it - real "your dad dancing at a wedding disco" stuff.

Well done to all on the blog by the way.
